The Body-Bind Horcrux, Weeks 1 and 2

The main topic of our January meeting was the Body-Bind Horcrux. This Horcrux is divided into four subsections, giving each full week of January a particular focus. We brainstormed easy tasks that people could try each week. Here is what we came up with for the first two weeks:

Week 1 - January 2-8 - Breaking Out of the Muggle Mindset
  • Give someone a compliment.
  • Encourage/support others.

Week 2 - January 9-15 - Nourish Your Body

  • Eat fruits and vegetables.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Substitute water or juice for soda.
  • Eat healthy snacks.

January Meeting Notes

Our January meeting was yesterday, and here is a summary of what we talked about:

Deathly Hallows Campaign, Body-Bind Horcrux - We have moved onto the third Horcrux of the DHC, the Body-Bind Horcrux. This Horcrux is about physical health, taking care of ourselves, and living a healthy lifestyle. It is a very timely Horcrux as many people make New Year's resolutions based on these issues. This Horcrux is a bit different from the previous two in that there is not one specific task that HPA members are asked to do. HPA staffers have written several interesting blogs on the Body-Bind Horcrux, and you can check them out here, www.thehpalliance.org/blog. The Horcrux is divided into four subsections. At our meeting yesterday, we brainstormed tasks that could be done for each topic. No one is expected to do all of the tasks we came up with, but everyone is encouraged to try at least a few of them.

Book Auction - Last year JK Rowling donated a set of signed Harry Potter books to be auctioned off for Helping Haiti Heal. The books were actually won by a company, the Association of Electrical Contractors of New York City, and they have put the books up for re-auction. One raffle ticket is $40, or three tickets are $100. You can buy tickets here, http://thehpalliance.org/action/campaigns/donate-to-scholarship-fund/. The proceeds go to AEC's Scholarship Fund, which gives scholarships to students interested in studying engineering, and Kamp Kiwanis, a camp in upstate New York for handicapped and underprivileged kids. The drawing will take place on January 23, 2011. Please pass this information on to anyone you think may be interested!

Next Meeting - Our next meeting will be Saturday February 12th.

December Meeting Notes

Our December meeting was this past Sunday, and here is a recap of what we discussed:

Holiday Mail for Heroes - This is a campaign sponsored by the Red Cross, which distributes holiday cards to military people and veterans. It is a great program, and we are happy to be participating for a second year. We did our cards at the meeting on Sunday.

Deathly Hallows Campaign - The HPA's Deathly Hallows Campaign is a campaign of epic proportions in which we will be fighting seven real world Horcruxes. The first two, the Starvation Wages Horcrux and the Dementor Horcrux, are running through the end of December.
Starvation Wages Horcrux - This Horcrux is about Fair Trade, specifically trying to get Harry Potter chocolate made Fair Trade. For all of the details on this Horcrux, please visit this website, http://dft.ba/-fairtrade. While you're there, please sign the online petition. It only takes a few seconds! HPA chapters and members are also encouraged to write letters to Warner Bros and Time Warner, urging them to switch to Fair Trade chocolate for their Harry Potter chocolate. We wrote letters at the meeting on Sunday. If you are interested in writing a letter on your own, you can find a template at the website listed above.
Dementor Horcrux - This Horcrux is about mental health whether it be something more serious such as clinical depression or just feeling down or stressed. The website for this is http://dft.ba/-expectopatronum. HPA chapters and members are encouraged to create a Patronus in the form of artwork to help fight their own personal Dementors.

TerraCycle - This is an ongoing project. We are collecting candy wrappers for TerraCycle. They, in turn, will make a donation to the HPA for any wrappers that we send them.

Chapter Christmas Party - Our Chapter Christmas party will be on Wednesday December 15th. We will be making Christmas cards for the residents of Fair Acres nursing home.

Next Meeting - Our next meeting will be Satuday January 8th.

TerraCycle - We are still collecting Mars and Cadbury candy wrappers for TerraCycle. We are recycling the wrappers by sending them to TerraCycle; then TerraCycle makes a donation to the Harry Potter Alliance.

Deathly Hallows Campaign

On October 31, 2010, the Harry Potter Alliance kicked off a campaign of epic proportions, the Deathly Hallows Campaign. During this campaign, we will be fighting seven real-world Horcruxes. The first is the Starvation Wages Horcrux. Unfortunately, the cocoa industry is full of inhumane and unjust economic and labor conditions. We are petitioning Time Warner (the parent company of Warner Bros.) to switch to Fair Trade chocolate to ensure that no chocolate in Harry's name is made under such unjust conditions. To sign the petition, please go here, http://dft.ba/-fairtrade, and please encourage your family and friends to do the same.

If you would like to learn more about the Harry Potter Alliance in general, please visit www.thehpalliance.org. To be involved with the HPA on a local level, please consider joining Dumbledore's Army of Delaware County. New members are always welcome! Send an e-mail to danielleg@thehpalliance.org for more info. :)
